This compressor was removed from a command air geothermal heat pump which had excessive vibration. The excessive vibration was thought to be balance issue. The home owner suspected a lightning strike. Upon complete tear down and inspection there are no signs of an electrical problem. Further inspection reveled that the counter balancer had become loose.

The counter balancer is secured to the motor rotor via two aluminum studs which where peened. The peening was found to be loose, an estimate of 1/64 ” play is between the peened stud and the counter balancer..
